Equal measures of comfort
Separated ineffably by a bus route;

Perhaps all we can seek is comfort:
Happiness is too much to ask for.

On Intensity & Emotions

Sometimes (mostly out of the blue)  you get this heavy bout of emotions hitting you simultaneously in the head and heart and you can hardly find a reason for it; all you can do in such instances is to close your eyes, take a deep breath and try to wash the feeling away.

It isn’t always a negative experience though. Sometimes it could just be a wave of weariness hitting you, or just a short shot of leftover emotions that have not completely passed from the previous encounter. It only becomes problematic when it changes your overall mood, or results in a prolonged dip in emotions.

People who are depressed experience this very often, and it causes their base happiness level to be lower, and usually disrupts and shortens any spell of happiness or positive emotions that they experience. It lurks in the background and threatens to override any form of positivity present.

Sounds pretty dreadful indeed. There are however counter measures to take if you happen to be someone who experiences this (often or otherwise) injection of negativity. I shall leave you to think of what these methods are for the time being and to devise and share some ideas for the benefit of yourself as well as others.

To be continued!

We Run

We run, and we run. We run all the way across the parade square, to the spot where our younger selves used to sit.

I’m in brown again, no longer the military green that I was clad in a moment ago. I feel like I’m in all white back in my junior college again, a proud young man ready to take on the world at breakneck speed.

I look around, and I notice this isn’t the elevated parade square of my recent two soaring years. This is the parade square of my childhood years, an old but happy place of endless running and jumping. A place where I felt (and still feel) truly free.

We reach our spot, and we giggle like we used to all those years ago. Silly we seem, but happy we are.

“Here?” I ask with a smile spread across my face.

“Yeah, here” you reply with a sincere laughter.

 I never felt free like this in a long time.

The next thing I knew, 8:40am. Blue stained sheets, old yellow blanket. I groaned, as all sense of happiness and freedom vanished into thin air in an instant.

Ups and Downs

When we think of ups and downs, we think of roller coasters and.. Life. The periodic ups and downs is probably one of the constants of life and it is true that what goes up must come down, and vice versa. We will all have smooth rides and rough patches, albeit at varying lengths for different people throughout their lifetimes. These highs and lows can occur at any aspect of life, be it in areas of financial, emotional, psychological or otherwise.

To a lesser extent, I think these peaks and rock bottoms occur on a daily basis as well, where our emotions can fluctuate in great degrees (whether due to a conscious reason or not). We can be happy in the morning, uptight in the afternoon, and probably end the day on a high at night. With this came the theory and study of a base level of happiness for individuals, where one with a higher base level experience more satisfaction and joy in life without external stimulus or reason. It is something inherited and at genetic level, and hardly within control. It is like our default mood, where some can be perpetually positive while others sulk all the time.

What I’m trying to drive across today really is that we need to tide through the lows and seek to bounce back to the highs. We inevitably get sad or discontented, but it is important that we do damage management and let allow our emotional state and state of mind to affect our decisions or harm our relationships with others. It is crucial that we take a step back when things are tough and not buckle in the face of emotional challenges.

Find your friends, seek your happiness pill (i don’t mean drugs; I mean the person or thing that lift your spirits), do the things that make you happy, go exercise, listen to your favourite Beatles or Queen song, have an ice cream.. Yank yourself out of the depressive state and things will look up sooner than you expect. Positivity attracts good things, and the reverse is true for negativity.

Remember, chin up when things get tough.. It’s not that you’ll drown a little slower, it’s that you’ll be out of the water soon enough if you can survive the initial onslaught.

Have a good evening everyone!

Important In Life / Existentialism

(Greetings ladies and gentlemen, it’s a public holiday today so I hope everyone can have a hazy good time.. Ops, I mean crazy good time. For those living in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia, do stay in doors more to avoid the haze; it is prudent to take care of your health. Here’s a short post for the morning in between the rush.)

Ask any man what he thinks is important in life:
Some will say wealth and others will say health,
While some will say happiness and others may say
Family or friends or someone he loves everyday;

Ask any guru what he thinks is important in life:
Some will say compassion and others will say love,
While some will say nirvana and others may say
There is nothing so very important in life except today;

Ask me what I think is important in life:
I say it is freedom in life within and without any strife;

Think’st thou otherwise?

Airport

I see families with luggages and excited children (likely siblings)
discussing amongst themselves
What they were going to do upon touch down
And where they were heading to after checking in;

I see people exchanging well wishes and waving goodbyes
Whether relatives or friends or new acquaintances
There is both an air of excitement and anticipation (Bon Voyage!)
Of new memories to be made and new places to be discovered;

A place of transition of incoming and outgoing:
People come and go as the planes take off and touch down
Leaving behind more than misty mornings and nostalgic twilight
Taking with them fresh dreams and new aspirations;

There is something special in the air.

What It Is

(I’m doing a poetry comparison on the theme of Happiness)

Happiness – something we think to be very complicated yet simple,
A notion that we hold that is to happen in future,
Almost like a concept that we create for ourselves
To believe that it is something somehow possible sometime (later);

It is not as you might think it to be really,
Happiness isn’t something abstract or to be reached,
It is made up of little moments of laughter and smiles,
Where in the midst of good company one feels blessed and content;

Don’t set it to be something you need to reach hard for,
It is already something you have with you if you
Would just look at the little moments where you’ve been thankful,
And you will find in those moments the happiness that you seek;

Happiness is what it is – what you make of it.
