Mid-Race

I was running
I was chasing
I was struggling
I was closing in;

Then the scene changed,
The people changed;

I was still running but
I was also smiling and
Picking up speed while
Feeling the wind in my hair;

Everything changed back in an instant
But it doesn’t matter anymore:
I was at the finishing line
The race is over.

Important In Life / Existentialism

(Greetings ladies and gentlemen, it’s a public holiday today so I hope everyone can have a hazy good time.. Ops, I mean crazy good time. For those living in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia, do stay in doors more to avoid the haze; it is prudent to take care of your health. Here’s a short post for the morning in between the rush.)

Ask any man what he thinks is important in life:
Some will say wealth and others will say health,
While some will say happiness and others may say
Family or friends or someone he loves everyday;

Ask any guru what he thinks is important in life:
Some will say compassion and others will say love,
While some will say nirvana and others may say
There is nothing so very important in life except today;

Ask me what I think is important in life:
I say it is freedom in life within and without any strife;

Think’st thou otherwise?

Mis-placed

(The weekends are good for blogging, so here’s one for the day. I don’t think there’s a structure to this one, but make what you will of it yeah? If you have a good analysis or thought about it, do share it with me. Cheers for the weekends!)

Misconstrued intentions
Mistaken notions
Misinterpreted actions
Misdirected goodwill

Just as how beautiful minds cannot thrive in a filthy world
And innocent thoughts cannot filter through a corrupt space

Some people are not meant to fit well into this place.

You Call My Name

(Your soldier boy here is on medical leave these few days, so a blog post sounds like a good way to spend some free time. I’m going to talk about this new friend that I’ve made recently, and I shall link it to the movie / novel, “A Walk To Remember”. It does add a warm fuzzy feeling on rainy days.)

I like the way you call my name
Instead of how others we know do it:
You make it so much more personal
That it does bring a smile to my face;

I don’t remember the last time I walked anyone home
But we’ve only been out twice and I have already
Strolled you to your apartment as many times
That it feels natural and just the thing to do;

i like how loyal and genuine you are
Without the general pretence we see all around us:
It makes impressions and manipulated words look out of place
On a dinner table shared between me and you;

I think this is something different altogether
Just as how you’re someone quite different
From the usual crowd I see and hang out with
That slowly changes me into someone I never was;

You are doing this one thing no one has done before:
You make me want to be better.

Crossroads

Sometimes we are led to crossroads
With a left and a right down each side:
Paths which lead on to the unknown
Where the destinations are purposefully out of sight;

We cannot know where each will take us to and
We cannot tell how the journeys would be but
One thing we can be sure of is that
We can only head down one of the two pathways;

How do we make up our minds at crossroads?
.
.
.

I have a feeling they lead eventually to the same end point.

Everyone Needs A Best Friend

(My apologies for not writing anything for a long time; military life is indeed very time consuming and leaves little time even for rest. With whatever little space I have to myself during the weekdays, I have not been able to squeeze in space for any writing so let’s see what comes up on a Saturday morning at seven yeah? Have fun everyone, it’s the weekends!)

All of us do get stuck at one point or another:
Points where our compasses swing in all directions and our watches tell a foreign time,
Times when our hearts and minds are not facing the same direction,
Scenes where we stand rooted at the spot with brewing anxiety and unease;

Then the nightmares set in:
We get recurring dreams of getting lost or running away,
Like a reflection of reality we cannot find our bearings or escape fast enough,
Yet we really do not know what we truly are finding or getting away from;

Stop.
Where has our clarity of mind vanished to?
What has become of the answers to our enquiring prayers?
When is it time for us to get a grip and turn around to face our fears?

I invite you now to reach out your hand and hold on to this person:
This individual in your life whom you can call when you’re feeling scared at three a.m,
This someone whom you seek advice from when faced with diverging paths,
This person whom you ask out for a cup of coffee when you’re feeling down;

I believe this is the very hand that will
Ease your fears and warm your heart when the thunders roar at night,
Take your hand and walk with you along one of the paths all the way to the end,
Bring a smile to your face and lift your spirits when things head downhill;

If at this point you realize that this piece of writing is disjointed and messy,
Do not worry for I can summarise one and twenty lines into a single line,
Presented on a platter with a colon and a space in between:

Everyone needs a best friend.

Once In A Distant Memory

I walk down those familiar aisles and take in the familiar smell
Of times and moments past that never will return nor be relived again
Like a distant memory washed away on a lonely shore
Taking the form of a bottle left in the sand – buried and forgotten;

I turn the corner and I can almost see us sitting there giggling
On all those afternoons where we turned obligation into fun
Injecting laughter into boring subjects of dull repetitions
Knowing that at the end of the day we are all in this together;

Yet just as we were about to concretize and come alive again
We vanish at the blink of an eye right before my very eyes
Bringing me back again to the present and to reality
Where what we were stays hidden in the chronicles of time;

Nevertheless I smile at how everything once was
And I’m glad that it all did happen faintly

Once in a distant memory.

(Here is a post dedicated to a special place that I will always remember, a place with memories and good times that I will always cherish. Today I learnt that in life we win some and lose some; tomorrow I will tell you what winning is about.)

No Comfort Nor Warmth

She was a keeper in every sense of the word and he thought
He could dominate her and possess every bit of her as if
She belonged wholly to him – every single inch of her all under
His control and all for his manipulation and order;

He never would have thought that one day even this faithful of a girl
Could get tired enough to turn around and walk away from him – forever
Never to ever return a call or a text or to even see him once ever again:
Gone like the autumn breeze which never again would drift by for a moment in time;

It was when the autumn breeze no longer caressed the back of his hair
That he realised he should have enjoyed the magic in the air a little more
And cherish the lightness in his spirits and steps which she brought him –
A spark which only she and she alone could ignite and make blossom;

With her and autumn gone there only was
The coldness of winter left to comfort him:

That which is of no comfort nor warmth.

(Very loose writing inspired by three lines describing a relationship; a relationship which has past and is likely a forgotten memory. It’s a five minutes job in a cafe while chatting with a friend, but I still hope it is worth a read.)

Space and Shoe Box

(Just 5 minutes before bed)

I don’t want to even imagine how you
Just severed ties with him when the relationship ended
Leaving him without a final message or a last letter
Choosing to just disappear totally from his life entirely;

It did appear like he chose to move on and push you aside
So you did likewise to move on and leave the memories behind
Like a locked away space somewhere in the depths of your heart
You chose to put that affair away and take it like it happened – never;

A blank space on your side and a shoe box on his:
What happened between you two became nothing more (to you) than an emptiness
While what took place between the two hearts became little more (to him) than
A shoe box of little messages and cards that contains a paleness of yesterday;

I am not sure what is filling the blank space of your heart right now,
Neither am I sure what is filling the shoe box of his memories there now;

His last attempt to fill up the space once again and add to the shoe box once more.
